10 apples are sitting on a table, they are sad, this is because when they were originally bought, there were x apples, all of them were friends, then the human took half away for a fruit salad, then another seven was taken away for an apple pie. The apples are depressed. There are only 10 of them left. They wish they had more new friends. How many apples were there originally before they got eaten?
I think it should be y apples because the variable is "y". I don't think that there should be "There are only 10 of them left." because you already said there are 10 apples in the desk. Still i think this word problem is good. It tells the question well

Ten apples are sitting on a table. They are sad, this is because when they were originally bought, there were y apples. Then the human took half of them away for a fruit salad, then another seven was taken away for an apple pie. So there are only 10 of them left now. How many apples were there originally before some of them disappeared?
